The London Marathon 2025 has come to a close, and with over a record breaking 56,000 participants completing the race, the data provides some fascinating insights. Whether you're a seasoned runner or preparing for your first marathon, these results offer a deeper understanding of performance trends, gender splits, age brackets, and pacing strategies. Let’s dive into the key takeaways from this year’s marathon results.

London Marathon 2025 Average Time
Here is average finish time for London marathon 2025. The average finishing time for the 2025 marathon was 4 hours and 40 minutes.

Gender Split of the London Marathon 2025
Let's look at gender split, this year’s event saw a gender breakdown of 56.1% male and 43.9% female. Interestingly, despite the growing presence of female runners in events like parkrun, the London Marathon still skews slightly more male. A small but notable 0.1% of participants registered as non-binary, marking a continued shift toward inclusivity in endurance sports.

When broken down by gender, men averaged 4 hours 23 minutes, while women clocked in at 5 hours 1 minute.

Over 5 hours runners
For those concerned about being slower than average—fear not! 4 hrs 40 mins was the average time but that mean that approximately as many runners ran over that times as they did under it.
Marathon times vary widely, with a large portion of finishers coming in well over 5 hours. In fact, over 20,057 runners finished in over 5 hours, over those 7,210 runners took over 6 hours, 1,785 took over 7 hours and 255 over 8 hours so regardless of your pace, you'll always have company out there.

Average age of those that ran the London Marathon 2025
The graph below shows the split of runners by age for the London Marathon, you can see the great majority was 19 - 39 with a decline percentage of older runners.

The below graph shows the average finish time by age, interestingly the 40 - 44 years old ran slightly faster (2 mins) than the 18 - 39 year old group. The times as you expect increase by age from there.

The below shows a table of the above graph. As you can see in the middle of the table the difference every 5 years varies from 4 to 7 minutes but then jumps up significantly each 5 year from 65 with 15 minutes being the difference.

London Marathon 2025 Average first and second half times
We'd expect to see a slower second half than first half but how much? The first half average was 2 hours 9 mins andthe second have 2 hrs 31 mins, so 22 minutes different, which really shows the heat of the day had an impact!

The below image splits the these times by gender, men slowed by 18.6% where as women slowed by 13.9%.

This graph shows how many minutes the 2nd half took longer on average than the first half by age, so the first bar on the left shows that 18-39 year olds took just over 20 minutes longer in the second half than the first.
