2023 Update: The FASTEST and SLOWEST parkrun in Wales


Let me start by reiterating what I always say in blogs that look are speed. A fast parkrun does not me its the best, a slow parkrun doesn't mean its the worst!!


Last year I wrote a blog about the fastest and slowest parkruns that you can find here, the 2023 data has been released so I've taken just the Welsh parkruns out to have a look at what has happened.


The method used to determine the fastest and slowest is the Standard Scratch Score (SSS) from here, if you want to know how the SSS is calculated, its explains in this video here. The lower the number the faster the course.




Last year the top 5 fastest parkruns in Wales were:

  1. Aberbeeg

  2. Swansea Bay

  3. Sandy Water

  4. Riverfront

  5. Groe

But there has been some change, Aberbeeg has lost its top spot and Cardiff has jumped from 7th to secure a spot:

  4. Aberbeeg

  5. Riverfront

It's worth noting that the score uses finish times to calculate the pace, so it generally means that on average people are running it quicker than they used to. Obviously at locations where there have been a change of course this could be a big driver.


There has also been some change at the other end:


Last year the top 5 slowest parkruns in Wales were:

  1. Coed Cefn-pwll-du

  2. Wepre

  3. Trelai Park

  4. Haverfordwest

  5. Nant y Pandy

Hafan Pwllheli wasn't in the data last year, presume as they has less than 50 events prior to 2022. I'm again surprised to see Trelai in there, as its not that tough a course and the average time on the website is 30:23, but goes to show its based on actual finish times, not comparing courses by the same runner, so is highly dependent on the runners attending.

If you the parkrun you are looking for is not included it maybe that it is too new to have date throughout 2022.
